Nighttime driving can be challenging due to lower visibility and fatigue. However, as an RV owner, some of your trips may require you to drive your rig at night. Read on for some key safety tips for driving your RV at night.
Never Drive While You’re Tired
Though this might seem obvious, it’s still the most important safety tip. Nighttime driving and fatigue are a dangerous combination, and you must avoid driving when tired. The extra size and weight of your RV will make it harder to come to a sudden stop, and the fact that you’re tired can increase your chances of being in an accident.
If you feel tired, pull over and get some rest or let your co-driver take over. Avoid caffeinated drinks or energy supplements to keep you awake. Instead, know your limits and get off the road if you feel sleepy while driving.
Clean Your Windshield
Your windshield is your only way to see the road in front of you. That’s why you must keep it nice and clean, especially when driving your RV at night. If you notice it has collected all kinds of debris, dirt, bug residue, and water droplets from traveling during the day, you’ll want to clean it before you hit the road.
Additionally, run your heating or cooling system to ensure that the inside of your windshield is spotless and free of condensation. Use a glass cleaner and paper towels to clean the inside of your windshield or polish it using newspaper to remove any streaks.
Inspect Your Windshield Setup Before You Leave
Double-check your wiper fluid and make sure you have enough to last through your trip. Also, if your wiper blades aren’t cleaning as efficiently as they should, consider replacing them as soon as possible.
