Tips for First-Time RVers

If you’re planning your first RV trip, you may be having trouble knowing where to start. But no need to worry. While no RV trip is the same, there are some general tips that will make your RV adventure a success!

Here are a few key tips for when owning an RV for the first time!

Proper Planning

It’s important to have a general plan in place, before hitting the road. A good first step is to pick a location and a route, as well as consider the maneuverability of your RV. For example, longer RVs don’t always move easily down city streets. If you’re traveling in a large model, it’s often best to look for scenic routes that keep you out of high-traffic areas.

Once you decide on your route, you can pick out some activities and meals to enjoy when you get there. Identifying what you will be doing on your trip will help you pack accordingly.

Additionally, creating a meal plan can save you time when it comes to shopping and prep work!

Smart Packing

It’s easy to overpack for an RV vacation, especially for your first few trips. For example, the kitchen can be a magnet for heavy, unnecessary gear. Try to pick up a small, versatile set of dishes and cookware and leave the specialty items at home. Also, plan on packing comfortable clothing and make sure to prepare for unpredictable weather conditions.

Make sure that your RV is also equipped with all the necessary emergency supplies. A roadside emergency kit and a first aid kit are critical pieces of equipment for any RV!

RV Travel Maintenance

Before your first trip, make it a point to learn some of the basics of what makes your RV work. In case you need to troubleshoot simple issues or spot any complex problems with your trailer, it’s worth knowing what to look for and how to go about fixing it, before hiring a professional.

In addition to learning about how your RV works, you should learn how it drives. Take a few test drives before you head out on your adventure, to get a feel for your RV. Whether you’re in a motorhome or towing a trailer, the extra practice will give you confidence and reduce stress on the road!
